This December, the Council will host a series of Electric Blanket Exchange events, giving residents the opportunity to swap in their outdated electric blankets for safer alternatives.
In exchange for an old electric blanket, participants will receive a cordless rechargeable electric hot water bottle and a thermal fleece fitted bedsheet, ideal for staying cosy and warm this winter without compromising on safety.
Event Details:
- 11 December, 10am-12pm: Balcony Room, Sixmile Leisure Centre, Ballyclare, BT39 9YU
- 12 December, 10am-12pm: Museum Lobby (Theatre end), Mossley Mill, Newtownabbey, BT36 5QA
- 16 December, 10am-12pm: Conference Suite, Crumlin Leisure Centre, BT29 4UP
- 17 December, 10am-12pm: Steeple Suite, Antrim Civic Centre, BT41 2UB
According to the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service, electric blankets over 10 years old should be replaced, and users should watch out for danger signs such as:
- Scorch marks or discoloured areas on the fabric
- Worn or frayed fabric, or exposed wires
- Damage to the power cable or connectors
- Buzzing sounds or scorching smells from the control unit.
The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Neil Kelly emphasised the importance of the initiative, saying:"Keeping our residents safe and warm is a top priority, especially during the winter months.
"Old electric blankets can pose serious risks, and these exchange events offer a practical and safe alternative. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this initiative and help ensure their homes are safer this season."
