The visit aimed to raise awareness about kidney disease and support the incredible work of NIKRF in providing care and research for affected children and families.
Hannah’s day began in the hospital foyer, where she teamed up with Bella, NIKRF’s beloved kidney-themed mascot cow, to sell Christmas cards designed by patients and supporters. The festive fundraiser brought smiles to visitors and staff alike, showcasing the creativity and resilience of young patients who are being supported with vital research and care initiatives from this local volunteer led charity.
The highlight of the day was Hannah’s visit to Barbour Ward, where she met with a family directly impacted by kidney disease. Dionne is a mother whose son recently received a life-saving kidney transplant and whose daughter is currently on dialysis while awaiting a dual kidney and liver transplant.
“The courage of these children and their families is beyond inspiring,” Hannah said. “Today has opened my eyes to the challenges they face and the critical importance of supporting kidney research and care in Northern Ireland. I’m so proud to work with NIKRF to make a difference.”
Hannah’s involvement with NIKRF has brought fresh attention to the organization’s ongoing mission to advance kidney disease research, provide support to affected families, and promote organ donation awareness.
NIKRF Research Operations Manager, Susan expressed gratitude for Hannah’s advocacy: “Having Miss Northern Ireland join us today has been an incredible boost to our cause. Her compassion and dedication shine through, and her platform helps amplify the voices of families living with kidney disease.”
As the festive season approaches, NIKRF invites the public to join the fight against kidney disease by supporting fundraisers, considering organ donation or by contributing to their Christmas Appeal: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/nikrfchristmasappeal

About NIKRF
The Northern Ireland Kidney Research Fund (NIKRF) is Northern Ireland’s longest standing renal charity in Northern Ireland and the sole organization dedicated to funding critical research into kidney disease. Never has this been more important as the prevalence of kidney disease is rising rapidly and is projected to become the fifth leading cause of death by 2040.
For over 50 years, this volunteer-led charity has raised millions of pounds to support vital research conducted by leading doctors and scientists-past present and future. Many of these researchers have advanced to esteemed positions as Consultants and Professors, helping to establish Belfast City Hospital as one of the leading kidney transplantation centres. Importantly all funds raised by NIKRF are invested exclusively in Northern Ireland.
