Motherwell South Parish Church news

Our Sunday worship at Motherwell South was led by Rev Alan Gibson. This week we were looking at the disciples encounter on the road top Emmaus and what we can learn as we too journey down that road.

The reading this week was from Like Chapter 24 v 13-35 - On The Road to Emmaus read by Jean Maddock.

Alan’s Sermon asked us to imagine we were walking on that road back to Emmaus on the very first Easter, leaving Jerusalem after two years following Jesus the hope that had brought had just died with him. But they didn’t realise they were about to learn the reality of the resurrection.

We’ve all walked on that road because the Emmaus road is that place between devastation and what comes next, it’s a thin line. For some of us it’s when we received a diagnosis we didn’t expect, for others we walked that road the day it dawned on us our marriage wasn’t going to survive, for some of us we walked on that road when we were told our job was about to come to an end, for some of us we walked that road when we buried somebody who’s irreplaceable. We’ve All Walked the Emmaus Road.

Alan then went on to tell us the things we miss when we read the passage, the Greek manuscript gives us a better understanding, we learn that the disciples are angry and arguing and when the stranger arrives they are condescending and rude to him. When they get to Emmaus they physically restrained Jesus and as he told them the story of Moses they asked him to abide with them as darkness was coming and as bread was broken their eyes were opened.

What does it say to us well I think that when we walk the Emmaus road we don’t always recognise Jesus, we don’t always see him but he’s listening to us just as he listened to the disciples, occasionally he asks us questions. And sometimes it’s not until the scriptures are open to us that things begin to change, if you’re on the Emmaus road just now open your bible. Amen
