The Shireland CBSO Academy has been shortlisted for an ‘excellence in training and education’ award. The nomination is a testament to a quiet but emphatic education revolution that is emanating at the school: a story of innovation that has gained the attention of national media and music press. Based in Sandwell, the Shireland CBSO Academy is the country’s first academy school opened in partnership with a professional symphony orchestra (City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra). The Academy puts music at the heart of the school and brings world-class music education to students, including the opportunity for every student to have instrumental or vocal lessons, as well as the opportunity to experience diverse musical genres through a network of professional musicians.
The Shireland CBSO Academy opened in 2023 to 150 Year 7 pupils from across Sandwell and throughout the first year saw visits from world-class musicians including Sheku Kanneh-Mason, James Ehnes and Jess Gillam, along with frequent visits from CBSO players, and Music Director Kazuki Yamada.
Emma Stenning, CEO at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra comments: “The CBSO has a proud tradition of delivering transformative education projects across the West Midlands. The Shireland CBSO Academy represents the latest bold step forward: a school where every student receives free instrumental or vocal tuition, is a member of at least one instrumental or vocal ensemble, receives an hour of dedicated music class per week, and works to a thematic curriculum that is built around music. At a time when music education in state schools is failing, the Shireland CBSO Academy stands out as a shining example of what might be possible when we once again put creative opportunity at the heart of a young person’s education.”
“The school’s brilliant students and staff, and the CBSO’s players and team, are all so excited to be recognised by Greater Birmingham’s Chambers of Commerce. This shortlisting is a proud moment for everyone involved, and we all thank The Chambers of Commerce for their recognition.
David Green, Principal at Shireland CBSO Academy, commented: “We are incredibly proud that Shireland CBSO Academy has been shortlisted for an excellence in training and education award. This recognition reflects our commitment to delivering a rich and innovative curriculum where music is interwoven throughout, enhancing students’ academic, musical, and personal growth.
“In partnership with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, we provide a unique learning environment where students can excel both musically and academically. Our approach nurtures creativity, builds confidence, and equips students with the essential skills they need to thrive in all aspects of life.”
