Arena Academy, part of CORE Education Trust, is on a mission to launch students into a universe of discovery by making physics exciting and accessible for all. As part of this initiative, the school recently hosted its first-ever Stargazing Event, inviting students, parents, and the wider community to explore the mysteries of the universe.
Led by Arena Academy’s dedicated science department and senior leadership team, the event was supported by a grant from the Ogden Trust, an organisation committed to increasing the uptake of physics at post-16 education. Attendees were treated to an incredible evening of discovery, complete with telescopic observations of Venus, Saturn, and Mars, as well as a mesmerising journey through space inside a giant inflatable star dome.
Raj Mann, Headteacher at Arena Academy, said:
“Our science department at Arena Academy works hard to nurture a love for learning and encourage an inquisitive mindset. Physics is sometimes seen as a difficult subject, but in reality, it is full of fun, mystery, and excitement—it truly is for everyone. We wanted to extend learning beyond the classroom and bring the wonder of space to our students, families, and local community.
“The feedback from our first-ever Stargazing Event has been overwhelmingly positive, with 100% of attendees telling us they would love to return. Seeing our students take the lead in guiding visitors through the night sky was wonderful to see, and we look forward to making this an even bigger success in the future.”
A highlight of the evening was Year 11 student and science ambassador, Leonis, who confidently led guests in using telescopes to explore the night sky. Despite the city’s light pollution, stargazers were able to observe Polaris, Ursa Major, and Orion’s Belt through the telescopes, making the experience both educational and awe-inspiring.
One stargazer shared: "Being able to see the students and teachers enjoy themselves in a non-academic environment was a real highlight." Others commented on how the event deepened their interest in physics and space-related careers.
Building on this success, Arena Academy is set to launch its first inter-school Physics Olympiad, where students will compete in hands-on challenges designed to spark curiosity and problem-solving skills. As they set their sights on new scientific activities, the school continues to encourage students to reach for the stars—both figuratively and literally.
The school’s commitment to making physics accessible continues to grow, ensuring that every student—regardless of background—can engage with and enjoy the subject. With the success of its first Stargazing Event, Arena Academy is confident it is bringing a love of astronomy and more to the heart of Great Barr.
