Call to scrap tourist tax proposals amid fears for UK holiday industry

A national tourism campaign is urging councils to rethink proposed “tourist taxes,” warning they could put off visitors and damage local economies that rely on domestic tourism.

The Back British Holidays group points to recent research showing that 21% of potential holidaymakers would cancel their overnight trip entirely if such a tax were introduced in their destination. Another 21% said they would still travel, but reduce their spending while away.

While no formal tourist levy has been proposed in Birmingham, campaigners warn the wider impact could affect destinations across the UK – especially those working to attract more domestic visitors.

Daniel Atwood, spokesperson for the campaign, said:

“Tourist taxes might seem like a small extra charge – but they could have a big impact. Local economies depend on visitor spending, and these taxes risk pushing tourists away or reducing how much they spend. It’s the wrong move at the wrong time.”

The campaign has also released a report forecasting a 32% drop in domestic holidays if economic pressures on tourism aren’t addressed. A petition has now been launched calling for national support and a halt to tourist tax proposals.
