Zego, a UK-based car insurance company for new drivers, says its product, Zego Sense, rewards good driving habits with cheaper renewal prices and real-time safety feedback — all powered through a driver’s smartphone.
“In cities like Birmingham, where insurance quotes for young drivers can easily exceed £4,000, we’re offering a smarter, fairer alternative,” said Sten Saar, CEO and co-founder of Zego.
“This is car insurance that works for you, not against you.”
Why Birmingham drivers face higher premiums
Young drivers living in Birmingham postcodes are typically charged more for car insurance than those in smaller towns or rural areas. Factors like higher traffic density, elevated rates of theft and fraud, and a greater risk of collisions all contribute to increased premiums — particularly for motorists aged 17 to 25.
A 2024 industry report found that 18-year-olds in Birmingham were routinely quoted £3,500–£6,000 per year to insure even modest hatchbacks.
A modern take on black box insurance
Zego Sense offers the benefits of black box insurance — safer driving, lower premiums — but without the need to install hardware in the car. Instead, the Zego Sense app uses smartphone sensors to track speed, braking and cornering, giving each driver a personal safety score that determines their renewal price.
Unlike traditional telematics policies, Zego Sense:
- Requires no physical black box
- Tracks driving through a phone app
- Offers real-time feedback and safety insights
- Comes with fully comprehensive SDP cover
- Includes no mileage limits or night-time curfews
According to Zego’s latest internal data, 92% of Sense drivers saved money when they renewed their policy in 2024.
“If you’re a young person driving carefully in Birmingham every day, you should not be penalised for your postcode,” said Saar.
“Zego Sense puts you in control — and proves that you deserve a better price.”
