A couple in their 70s returned to the Jewellery Quarter for the first time in 25 years yesterday and they were both reduced to tears.

It’s just over 27 years since Phillip Stanley Wakefield retired as a jeweller (a job he held all his long working life) where he and his brother Bernard closed the doors on H.A Clifton Jewellers in Spencer Street, Hockley and it’s a little over a year since he passed away.

54 years ago he made the wedding rings for his daughter Carole and her husband-to-be Dennis, and yesterday Steven Charles Quance performed the greatest act of kindness….

Steven is a Jeweller with over 38 years in the trade and to all who know him, is an exceptional businessman with a big heart.

When Steven was approached by Carole and Dennis’ son to have her family-made engagement, wedding and eternity rings altered so she could wear them again, he was also told about the family connection with the trade and the area. So he invited them to travel up from Wales to his workshop in Warstone Lane,Hockley.

He took the time to reminisce with them about their family story in this historic part of Birmingham, took a real interest in their stories of her Dad and his work and invited them into his workshop to watch as he adjusted, polished and restored her jewellery to it’s original condition.

On watching him at work, they were reduced to tears of joy and nostalgia as they were reminded of the skills that Phillip used when creating beautiful jewellery.

On speaking about Steven, the family described him as: “The most wonderful, kind and talented man you could ever hope to meet. I definitely encourage anyone wanting fine jewellery for a special occasion or family treasures to be repurposed or rejuvenated to visit Steven.”
