Connecting generations through kindness and care this winter

This winter, pupils, staff, and parents at The Olive School, Small Heath came together to bring joy and comfort to their local community through a series of heart-warming initiatives.

Pupils at The Olive School, Small Heath deliver hampers to local charities and care homes.

A range of delicious fundraising events kicked off activities, with samosa, rice, pasta, and noodle sales hosted throughout November and December. Proceeds from these sales were used to create gifts and hampers for various organisations that support vulnerable members of the community.

Members of staff at the school also prepared hampers that were presented to elderly residents at Abbey Court Care Home.

Each year group contributed to the spirit of giving. Reception and Year 1 pupils prepared hampers for Zoë's Place Baby Hospice, and Year 2 pupils showed their appreciation for the community’s everyday heroes by creating thoughtful hampers for the Bus Service and Fire Brigade.

Years 3 and 4 participated in 'Smile in a Box' for Migrant Help UK, decorating shoe boxes and filling them with gifts for children. Year 5 prepared hampers for residents of the Birmingham Crisis Centre, while Year 6 collected bedding donations for St Basils, supporting young people experiencing homelessness. Gift hampers were also assembled for elderly residents at Evergreen Care Home.

The school prepared hot meals that a team of staff and pupils distributed to homeless and vulnerable people through As-Suffa Outreach in Birmingham, spreading warmth and nourishment during the cold winter months.

By spanning generations and addressing a wide range of needs, the school’s efforts brought support to babies, children, adults, and the elderly, embodying the true spirit of Christmas and making a positive impact across Birmingham.

The Winter Gift Programme is an annual campaign which sees pupils and staff from every Star Academies school unite to participate in a broad range of charitable giving, acts of kindness and volunteering; all with one simple aim – to make sure no one faces the challenges of winter alone.
