From ‘Grandad’ to ‘Pops’: Birmingham’s favourite grandparent names uncovered

From Nana to Grandma or Papa to Pops, we all have different names for our grandparents. Originating from mispronunciations, locations or tradition – there can be many reasons as to why we refer to our grandparents the way we do.

Grandparent names

A new survey from Legal & General uncovers the most popular names for Grandparents across the UK and explores the meaning behind them.

In Birmingham, ‘Grandad’ emerged as the top male grandparent name, with 50% of respondents selecting it as their preferred term. This highlights the strong appeal of traditional names in the region.

Among female grandparent names, ‘Nan’ was the most popular choice among Birmingham respondents. ‘Nanny’ followed in second place with 16%, while ‘Grandma’ came in third at 15%, reflecting a mix of familiar and affectionate naming preferences.

When asked how their grandparent names were decided, 37% of Birmingham respondents said ‘it’s a family tradition,’ making it the most popular reason. ‘It was my choice’ followed as the second most common reason, selected by 23% of respondents.
