Cockshut Hill School, part of the Summit Learning Trust, was thrilled to welcome renowned motivational speaker Junior Saunders for a visit this month.
Mr Saunders is the Director and Founder of GCSE Boost and Making Careers Happen LTD. He spent most of his life in foster care and almost went to a young offenders unit at age 14. While in Marlowe Children’s Home in Gloucester, he chose to return to his foster mother, go back to mainstream education, and finish his GCSEs.
He attributes this decision to wanting a sense of belonging and the need for a sense of achievement, despite all the setbacks he had faced. The support that Junior received from his foster mother, probation officer and mentors, and the Head Teacher of Lockleaze School inspired him to create GCSE Boost.
He delivered an empowering and insightful session to learners in Years 8 through 11. The event focused on fostering a growth mindset, understanding the apprenticeship journey, and building essential communication skills for the workplace.
Mr Saunders, celebrated for his engaging and transformative speaking style, captivated the audience with his personal stories and practical advice. The session aimed to equip children and young people with the mindset and tools necessary to navigate their educational and professional journeys confidently.
He highlighted the importance of resilience, perseverance, and embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. Learners were encouraged to see failures not as setbacks but as stepping stones to success.
Drawing from real-world examples, Mr Saunders demystified the apprenticeship pathway, emphasizing its value as a viable and rewarding route to career success. He shared insights on how students can explore opportunities, make informed decisions, and take proactive steps toward their goals.
He also provided children and young people with actionable tips on how to present themselves professionally, craft compelling CVs, and approach conversations with potential employers with confidence and clarity.
The event was a resounding success, Cockshut Hill learners feeling inspired and motivated with one Year 11 feeding back:
"Junior Saunders was amazing! He really made me think differently about challenges and how I can turn them into opportunities."
Marc O’Malley, Acting Principal at Cockshut Hill Said:
“Cockshut Hill School is committed to providing its learners with opportunities to learn from accomplished individuals who can inspire them to achieve their full potential. Junior Saunders’ visit aligns perfectly with our mission to nurture confident, capable, and future-ready young people.”
