As part of the commemorations, learners engaged in special history lessons focusing on the sacrifices made by both military personnel and civilians during the war. Assemblies throughout the week explored the significance of VE Day and why it continues to be an important moment of reflection.
At 12 noon on VE Day, the whole school paused for a two-minute silence, observed in classrooms across the site.
One of the week’s highlights was a special VE Day tea party hosted at the school for residents of Foliot Fields and Maple Dene care homes. Guests were treated to tea, cakes and sandwiches served by members of the Student Union, who also shared wartime readings and led conversations with the visitors. The school choir added to the atmosphere with a selection of 1940s classics, sparking singalongs and plenty of flag-waving.
This memorable day not only paid tribute to those who served but also helped learners appreciate the relevance of history in today’s world, bringing generations together in celebration and remembrance.
Alex Hughes, Principal at Ninestiles, an Academy said:
“It was a privilege to welcome our guests and see our learners connect with the past in such a meaningful and respectful way. VE Day reminds us of the importance of community, resilience, and peace and I’m incredibly proud of the way our school came together to honour that message.”
