The former primary school teacher left the classroom to study Blacksmithing at the National School of Blacksmithing in Hereford. Clare began her Make it at Market journey while in her final months of college where she qualified with Distinction honours.
Clare’s artistic work takes inspiration from folklore and history, leaning into the alternative and macabre. She also has a passion for historical and archaeological ironwork. This involves developing an understanding of an object based on the historical context, tool marks and corrosion patterns to reverse-engineer how it was made then replicating the object using traditional methodology and techniques to glean insight into the past.
“It’s a scary thing to do, leaving a steady income and going back into education but I am so happy I took that bet on myself,” said Clare Collier. “I’m so proud to represent blacksmithing on Make It At Market. The experience has been incredible, helping me streamline my process and start my business doing something I love.”
Filmed at the picturesque Waterperry Gardens, Oxford, Make It At Market follows British artisans as they rise to creative challenges and work with experts to turn their passion into a thriving business. Clare hopes her story will inspire readers who cherish the beauty of handmade work and the continuation of a traditional craft.
