Experts say homeworkers should take on ‘fake commute’ to improve leg health

Homeworkers from Sutton Coldfield are being encouraged by experts to go on a ‘fake commute’ each day in order to improve their leg and vein health (March, 2025).

Donald Adam, Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Premier Veins in Sutton Coldfield, which is encouraging people to go on a ‘fake commute’ each day in order to improve their leg and vein health.

Expert surgeons from Premier Veins, which has a clinic at Ashfurlong Medical Centre, say that people are living more sedentary lives and those who work-from-home are more at risk of vein disease.

Donald Adam, Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Premier Veins on Tamworth Road in Sutton Coldfield, said: “Since the pandemic, the world has evolved in many ways, including how people work. According to Advanced Workplace Associates, the average number of days worked in the office has reduced from 3.8 days per week to 1.4 days per week.

“As a result, it is clear that people are living more sedentary lives, which has arguably led to a rise in chronic illnesses including vein disease, heart disease and orthopaedic issues.

“It’s important that people get up and move between 5,000 to 10,000 steps per day, in order to remain active. We’d suggest that one way of achieving this goal is to take part in a fake commute to work each day. Before sitting down at your laptop and starting your day, take time to walk around the block or to the local park and back in order to get those steps in and improve leg health.”

Premier Veins is dedicated to transforming vein health and restoring confidence. Its expert team, with a strong foundation in the NHS and research, established Premier Veins in the Midlands in 2012 to deliver a superior level of personalised attention.

Its experienced consultant vascular specialists offer advanced, minimally invasive treatments that can help people regain confidence in their appearance.

Donald added: “Anyone who works from home should look out for the following symptoms, which could suggest they are suffering from varicose veins:

  • Twisted, swollen and enlarged veins
  • Itchy or tingly skin
  • Throbbing, heavy and tired legs and feet.

“People who are older, overweight and live a sedentary lifestyle or have a history of varicose veins are at a higher risk of developing the condition.

“If anyone is ever in doubt about their varicose veins, we always recommend speaking to expert consultants like us and we can perform a vein duplex ultrasound scan to assess blood flow and detect poorly functioning valves. We can then diagnose whether they have varicose veins or not and provide them with information on the best treatment plans.”

Donald qualified from the University of Edinburgh and went on to gain extensive training in vascular and endovascular surgery in Edinburgh, Leicester and Adelaide, Australia.

He was appointed as Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon in Birmingham in 2004.

Donald has been awarded a doctorate in vascular research at the University of Edinburgh and is an author of several publications on varicose veins and leg ulcers.

Premier Veins has received the Best for Varicose Vein Treatments - UK award by Global 100 for two consecutive years.
