Art is more than just a creative outlet; it can be a powerful tool for improving mental health. Whether it’s painting, printmaking, or sculpture, engaging in an artistic activity can aid relaxation, boost your mood – and even reduce mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, according to new research.
The study, which surveyed 2,000 people in the UK and nearly 600 artists, was conducted by the art specialists at Jackson’s Art.
The study revealed nearly all (97%) of those that take part in artistic hobbies find it has had a positive impact on their mental health. Despite this, only 15% of the general population are taking part in artistic activities. In addition, nearly half (48%) agree that taking up a new hobby would benefit their mental health.
What is it and when does it take place?
Bristol, UK, 2nd May 2025 - Bristol’s vibrant Harbourside will come alive with colour, creativity, and community as 100 artists from across the UK gather for a Plein Air event set to take place on 2nd May. This dynamic, open-air celebration of artistic expression invites the public to witness the creative process in real time as artists capture the energy, history, and beauty of the city’s waterfront.
The event, led by Jackson’s Art, will transform Bristol’s iconic Harbourside into an open studio, with artists setting up their easels along the waterfront to create original artworks inspired by the surroundings, from the historic docks, boats, skyline, and street life that make this area such a cultural landmark.
“Bristol has always had a strong connection with the arts,” says organiser Lisa Takahashi, “This is more than just an art event, it’s a celebration of Bristol’s creative spirit and a rare opportunity for the public to watch live artwork being made by a diverse community of artists, from professionals to passionate hobbyists.”
A Chance for the Public to Engage
Whether you're an art enthusiast or curious passerby, this free and family-friendly event offers a unique opportunity to experience Bristol’s thriving arts scene in motion, right in the heart of the city.
Local residents and visitors are encouraged to come down and engage. The event is free, family-friendly, and open to everyone.
Building Community and Promoting Wellbeing
This is the fourth plein air event organised by art material enthusiasts, Jackson’s Art, following the success of previous plein air events at Kilve Beach in Somerset and Hampstead Heath in London. The events foster an inclusive and supportive environment where local and visiting artists can connect and collaborate, whilst capturing the beauty of some of the UK’s most picturesque locations.
“Our plein air events are as much about community and wellbeing as they are about capturing landscapes and making art.” says organiser Lisa Takahashi. “They offer a chance to slow down, connect with nature, be present in the moment, and meet like-minded people.”
“There’s something truly special about painting in the open air. The natural light, shifting landscapes, and fresh air not only inspire creativity but also promote mindfulness and wellbeing.”
“Our plein air events shine a light on the stunning landscapes that the UK has to offer, this upcoming event celebrates the unique blend of historic and contemporary landscapes that define Bristol, with views of iconic landmarks such as the SS Great Britain and the candy-coloured terraced houses of Cliftonwood offering irresistible subject matter.”
Psychologist Dennis Relojo-Howell explains why engaging in artistic activities like plein air is good for your wellbeing
“Natural scenes such as landscapes, seascapes, and botanical subjects have a calming effect on the mind, which may explain why many artists gravitate towards them. Nature has long been associated with reduced stress and improved wellbeing, and engaging with these themes through art can evoke similar benefits. Painting or drawing natural subjects encourages mindfulness, allowing artists to focus on details and immerse themselves in the process, which can be meditative and soothing.”
Attendee Quotes from Previous Plein Air Events
“It was really special to be with a big group of artists out in the elements sharing their passion for painting and creating.”- Louise Waugh, professional artist
“I enjoyed the opportunity to paint with other artists. It is always inspiring to see what others can do. I also enjoy the security of painting in a group. I don’t have the confidence to set my easel up on my own!”
“Painting plein air is essentially a solitary pursuit, so the joy of the day, beyond the variable and interesting location, was the gathering of artists and the exposure to a range of image-making and image makers with a common purpose.”
