On Thursday 24th April, from 3 pm, the people of Yate will have the opportunity to find out more about Parkinson’s and the support on offer for families affected by the condition.
The team at Care UK’s Ladden View, on Fletcher Road, is joining forces with Parkinson’s UK to offer helpful guidance and practical tips for improving the everyday lives of those affected by the condition. The talk will also provide useful information about local support groups and specialist Parkinson’s services in Yate and the surrounding areas.
On the day, there will be an informative ‘Understanding Parkinson’s’ talks and a dedicated Q&A session to give everyone the opportunity to raise their individual concerns and share personal experiences, and attendees will also be able to meet the team at Ladden View and take a closer look at what life is like at the care home.
Parkinson's affects one in every 500 people in later life. Ladden View resident Chris Riggs shared his own experience with Parkinson’s, saying: “I have been living with Parkinson’s for 5 years now, after being diagnosed at 75 years old. I didn’t feel unwell, and still to this day, I don't feel unwell. I do struggle with my balance which is part of living with Parkinson's but prior to my diagnosis, I had never heard of the condition. I am now more aware and have a better understanding of what Parkinson's is.
“I love being as independent as I can, and I still very much enjoy my life. Although I now live with Parkinson's, it hasn’t changed my outlook on life, I am very happy.”
Reflecting on his past hobbies, Chris said: “I loved flying aircrafts many years ago. I spent a lot of my time in the air and enjoyed every minute of it. When I was diagnosed with Parkinsons, I had to give up some of my hobbies like flying aircrafts as I was unsteady on my feet. However, since my diagnosis, I have found a love for gardening and the outdoors. I also love walking and being in the fresh air. At Ladden View, I recently took part in a sponsored walk for Comic Relief with a combined total of 15.37 miles walked with my fellow residents.”
When sharing advice for those living with Parkinson's, Chris said: “Just because you have been diagnosed with Parkinson's, doesn't mean life has to change or stop, there are plenty of ways to still enjoy life. So, keep positive and have fun!”
Sarah Daly, Home Manager at Ladden View, said: “According to Parkinson’s UK, two people in the UK are diagnosed with Parkinson's disease every hour*. Most people diagnosed are over the age of 50.
“Across our Care UK homes, we care for many residents living with Parkinson’s, and we have seen first-hand how the experiences of individuals and their families can be transformed by having access to the right information and support.
“We are looking forward to welcoming the community to Ladden View to benefit from the specialist knowledge and expert advice on offer.”
