Laura’s arrival coincides with an exciting new chapter for Highdown, following the school’s move to the GLF Schools Trust in October 2024. Laura brings over 14 years of experience in education, including a decade in leadership roles, and an exceptional record of positively transforming pupils’ lives and learning experiences.
Highdown is already known as one of the best schools in Reading and this summer’s exam results placed Highdown as the top performing non-selective state school in Reading; with 80% of our pupils passing Maths and English at GCSE and over a quarter of A-Level grades awarded A*- A.
Furthermore, the school’s ‘Progress 8’ score, which measures pupil achievement nationally between the start and end of secondary school, has recently been measured by the Department of Education as well above the national average.
As Senior Deputy Head at Kennet School in Thatcham, Laura has been celebrated for her outstanding leadership and commitment to raising the quality of education. Ofsted recently judged her contributions to curriculum development, school improvement, professional development, and performance management as ‘Outstanding’. Previously, Laura made an impact during her tenure at Highdown as Assistant Headteacher, where she redesigned the school’s house and student leadership systems.
Commenting on her appointment, Laura Mathews said: "I am hugely excited to be joining Highdown School and GLF. As a former senior leader at Highdown, I am aware of the huge potential of both staff and pupils, as well as the strong support from parents and the community. I am looking forward to meeting you at some of our fantastic community events: perhaps I can tempt you to attend the fantastic school production before half term!”
Laura’s career also spans key roles such as designated lead teacher for safeguarding and child protection at West London Free School and leader of their Initial Teacher Training Programme. This diverse experience has equipped Laura to drive meaningful change across all facets of school life.
Beyond her school leadership, Laura is a dedicated advocate for education on a broader scale. She has presented at national conferences, led peer-reviewed teaching projects with the Schools, Students and Teachers Network, and serves as a governor for a local college supporting children with special educational needs.
Laura holds a degree in Classics from Durham University, a Master’s in Educational Leadership, and is currently completing her National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH). A passionate lifelong learner, she has also embarked on a PhD in Education.
Julian Drinkall, CEO for GLF Schools said: “We are delighted to welcome Laura back to Highdown School. Her vision, expertise, and commitment to educational excellence align perfectly with our shared belief in the transformative power of schools for individuals and society.
“This is the start of an exciting new chapter for Highdown, and I’m pleased that Laura will be the one to lead the school as it continues to go from strength to strength”.
Arttu Rajantie, Chair of the Highdown School Standards Board said: “We are thrilled to have Laura back at Highdown as our new Headteacher. Having previously served as an exceptional Assistant Headteacher here, she has a deep understanding of our school’s values and community. With her impressive experience, excellent credentials, and inspiring vision, Laura is perfectly poised to guide Highdown to new heights of success.”
