Local charity launches 60 year celebrations with horse plea

Scropton Horse Centre - home to Scropton Riding for the Disabled - needs more horses to continue offering activities for local people with additional special needs

Ponies (L-R) Sootie, Mickey and April – whose collective ages all add up to 60 - tuck into the Riding Centre’s 60th anniversary carrot cake. All are well-loved, actively working ponies. April is the oldest at 23.

A South Derbyshire riding centre celebrating its 60th anniversary this year is facing more pressing worries than the numbers of candles on its horses’ cakes.

Scropton Horse Centre, fears without more horses and ponies for its service users, it will struggle to meet the growing needs of the community, who come far and wide for riding lessons and activities.

To meet demand, it is launching an appeal to find horses and ponies to buy or to take on loan - and hopes people across Derbyshire, who are seeking permanent or semi-permanent homes for their loved equines, will step forward to help.

Helen Davis, a trustee at Scropton Horse Centre, said: “Horses are amazing animals and through them we have opportunities to make real and lasting differences to the lives of local adults and children with additional needs

“The Riding for the Disabled Centre helps a wide range of disabilities from physical to learning and we hope to extend our reach into helping local people suffering with mental health problems too.”

“Our horses are well cared for and much loved by everyone - staff, volunteers and riders.

“A really good home and a very worthwhile role is awaiting the right horses.”

Scropton Horse Centre is looking for horses and ponies from 12.2 to 16 hands high, aged between six to 16 years old.

They need to be versatile allrounders with a kind temperament.
