Step back in time with Great Central Railway's 1940s weekend

Great Central Railway is pleased to announce the return of its much-loved 1940s Weekend, taking place from 31 May to 1 June 2025.

1940's Weekend at The Great Central Railway

This special edition will commemorate the pivotal year of 1945 and the 80th anniversary of the nation emerging from the shadows of war, offering an immersive experience of life in Britain as it looked toward a brighter future.

The Great Central Railway’s period stations will become a living, breathing time capsule, portraying the resilience, challenges, and triumphs of the British people as they adapted to peacetime. From bustling railway stations to lively dance halls, visitors will witness firsthand the indomitable spirit of the home front, the changing role of women in the workforce, and the railway’s crucial contribution to Britain’s post-war recovery.

All along the line, from Loughborough to Leicester North, scenes from the home front will be brought vividly to life. Period re-enactors will portray everyone from Merchant Navy sailors and Land Army girls to civilians doing their bit, with wartime chatter, and a fair bit of cheeky 1940s banter. A traditional street party will add a burst of colour and joy, complete with bunting, dancing, and singalongs.

There will be no shortage of live entertainment. Popular performers Jane Darling and Johnny Victory will return with their beloved wartime sets, alongside the Ashby Big Band Sound, DJ Woody, and other musicians keeping the atmosphere lively across the stations. Dance lessons in the Lindy Hop and Jitterbug will run throughout the weekend, offering visitors a chance to step back in time on the dancefloor. The much-anticipated Shirls Girls fashion show will also be back, combining 1940s fashion whilst sharing true stories from ladies that lived and contributed throughout the war and after, while comedy duo Royal Air Farce promise to raise plenty of smiles.

Rothley station will host a range of vintage stalls, selling period clothing, homeware, and collectables. Historic vehicles, including military trucks, classic cars, and wartime commercials, will be displayed across the railway, adding even more authenticity to the sights, sounds, and smells of the 1940s.

The event will also reflect on the profound social changes taking place in 1945 – from the winding down of rationing to Churchill’s unexpected election defeat – and explore how communities across Leicestershire and beyond adapted to a new world. Thought-provoking exhibits and moments of reflection will complement the joyful celebration of peace and resilience.

The UK’s only double-track, main line heritage railway, Great Central Railway runs a nostalgic 8-mile route between Loughborough, Quorn, Rothley, and Leicester North. Famous for its authentic steam train experiences, GCR offers an unparalleled opportunity to journey back in time and appreciate the golden era of rail travel.

Whether you're a lifelong railway enthusiast, a history buff, or simply looking for a memorable day out, the 1940s Weekend promises an unforgettable celebration of Britain's wartime spirit and the hope of better days ahead.
