Eastwood businesses being encouraged to work together to support town centre

A new group has been formed in Eastwood with the aim of getting local businesses supporting each other and breathing new life into the town centre.

A new group has been formed in Eastwood to get businesses supporting each other to revitalise the town centre.

The group of local business owners held its first meeting last week at Coffee & Cream in the town and plans another meeting in two weeks' time when they hope more businesses and business owners will join the ones already on board at the first meeting.

John Williamson, of Better Than Hypnosis, one of the group's founders, said: "It's all about improving Eastwood town centre, making it attractive and use the local shops.

"It's about getting local businesses to help each other and grow the high street."

Last month, Broxtowe Council leader Coun Milan Radulovic (Lab), said he would be getting on to the new East Midlands mayor to get £25m invested into Eastwood town centre.

But John says it is the inactivity of the council for many years that has also led to them forming their group.

He continued: "One of the reasons we're doing this because for years they (the council) haven't.

"And now we're kicking up a fuss, they're suddenly interested, but that's not good enough.

"I was told by a town councillor that Eastwood high street was not their responsibility.

"Well it's not about responsibility, it's about a human nature, ethical postion and making it a good place to be and that's why we're doing this now and that's what has inspired me to start this group."

The plan now is to hold another meeting in two weeks' time and get, John hopes, more businesses and people attending so they can set out the group's priorities and plan of action moving forward.

And one of the main aims of the group will be to secure funding from various sources, including local authorities and local people in and around the town.

John said: "The next meeting will be to establish a contact point for people wanting to support us with funding by setting up an email and a Facebook page.

"We need people to get involved and interested in this because it's not just a one-off, this is a campaign to help support the town centre and we want everyone to come and support us."

More details of how the group will go about this will be revealed after it's next meeting.

In the meantime, anyone who wants to be part of the group or attend the next meeting should call John Williamson on 07970 331741 for details.
