Eastwood Volunteer Bureau and Food Bank manager celebrates a year in charge

The manager of Eastwood Volunteer Bureau and Food Bank (EVBFB) received a visit from the leader of Broxtowe Council to mark her successful first year at the helm.

Rachel Laurenson, EVBFB manager with Coun Milan Radulovic, Broxtowe Council leader.

Rachel Laurenson was appointed as the EVBFB's new manager following the retirement of the the previous post holder.

She immediately set about reviewing its operations, and some important changes have been introduced to offer a fairer and more robust service for the north Broxtowe community.

During a recent visit from Coun Milan Radulovic MBE (Lab), the council leader, Rachel explained the changes to demonstrate how the bureau uses its funds wisely so that theservices are better used.

She said: "One of the most important changes has been to the food bank operation.

"You now must register for the food bank with a simple disposable income review carried out by the local Citizens Advice Bureau.

"EEmergency food parcels are possible if you drop intofood bank on Fridays, but we then ask that clients register with CAB."

On a Friday each week volunteers hand out between 30 and 50 food parcels to those registered on the scheme.

This is quite a task as the food must be carefully rotated andbagged ready and any shortfall collected from the local community or supermarkets.

Not only are the volunteers vital in providing this service, but the generous donations of the community also ensure the food bank continues to be well stocked.

The support of the community also vital and was seen at its best for this month's special Christmas food bank.

Rachel said: "The people of north Broxtowe did themsleves very proud.

"The amount of food donations we have received and money too have been the most we've ever had in the 11 years that I have been involved.

"Thank you all from the bottom of my heart as none of this would be possible to do without our amazing community.

Rachel has been working at the EVBFB for more than 10 years.

She started with them as the befriender coordinator then moved on to do both that and the transport as well.

Rachel, who hails from Heanor, is an experienced community worker and her skills, compassion and local knowledge make her the perfect candidate for the job.

Coun Radulovic said: "I have been involved with the EVBFB since its inception and I'm delighted that Broxtowe Council has been able to offer them grant aid on occasions.

"Over the years hundreds of people have benefited from its work.

"It's unfortunate that some people must still rely on such services but, and I'm proud to say it, that the bureau continues to support the vulnerable and at-risk people in our community aided by Rachel, her team and the wonderful volunteers.

The bureau always on the lookout for more volunteers.
