Kimberley MP optimistic 2025 will be a great year for Britain

Happy new year! I hope you had a great time welcoming in the new year with those close to you and you’re ready to face 2025.

Alex Norris is looking forward to 2025 with optimism.

Currently going through Parliament and set to come into effect in 2025 are the Renters’ Rights Bill and the Workers’ Rights Bill.

The former will end Section 21 'no fault' evictions, and give many renters the stability they need, as well as protections from unfair rent rises.

The Worker’s Rights Bill will guarantee parental leave, sick pay and protection against unfair dismissal from day one of employment and bring an end to exploitative fire and rehire and zero-hour contracts.

Last week, we had votes in parliament on the Children’s Wellbeing & Schools Bill.

This will update the framework for teachers’ pay and conditions so all state schools have the same flexibility to recruit talent that academies have had.

It will roll out free breakfast clubs to primary schools and put limits on the number of branded items of uniform that parents can be asked to buy.

Taken together, these measures are expected to save parents on average £500 per child every year.

Most importantly, this Bill brings in the biggest update to child safeguarding in a generation, creating a register of children not in school so no child falls through the cracks in the system.

The Online Safety Act will also be coming into force this year after far too much delay.

This will create a duty of care for online platforms like Facebook, requiring them to take actions against harmful content on their sites.

We’ll be fulfilling another manifesto commitment as our railways start to come back into public ownership, following laws passed last year.

In April this year, ‘non dom’ status will be abolished, as promised in October’s budget.

This will ensure people pay taxes where they live and bring in £1bn for the country.

April will also see the promised rise in national minimum wage by 6.7 per cent.

This will be worth up to £1,400 for 11,800 workers in Nottingham alone.

There’ll be much more to come as the year unfolds and the parliamentary timetable shapes up.

Although there’s still a lot of work to clean up the mess we inherited, I’m optimistic 2025 will be a great year for Britain.
