COLUMN: This May, the voters sent us a message. We have to listen.

The recent County Council election results were a message to the Government and Labour that we need to rebuild trust and hope writes Juliet Campbell MP for Broxtowe.

The recent local election results were disappointing for Labour in Broxtowe. We had hoped to build on last year's election successes. Instead, we now have a county council where Reform UK hold a large majority.

This Government is delivering real progress. Raising the minimum wage and pensions. Cutting NHS waiting lists. Employing more teachers. Passing the Employment Rights Bill. Launching Great British Energy. Filling in potholes. Bringing down energy bills.

After 14 years of decline under the previous government, people are frustrated by the state of our roads, can’t see an NHS dentist and the cost of living is still high. The scale of the damage to our economy and public services by the Conservatives is going to take time to fix and the Government is heading in the right direction.

But the message the voters sent this May is clear.

People want to see the change they voted for last year and they want to see it fast.

To win back support Labour not only need to deliver the change we promised, but also connect with the people in our communities as our most valuable partners in the project to improve their lives.

We must ensure that people feel connected, listened to and valued. That they have more money in their pocket and see tangible improvements in our roads, NHS, and schools. I want people to feel optimistic about the future of our country.

And we must be crystal clear – the political party that who voted to deny millions of people basic protections at work, have no plan to improve the lives of communities or to invest in the future of this country, cannot deliver the change people need.

Speaking to and listening to the residents is by far the most enjoyable part of my job. I will be running upcoming workshops and listening events to ensure that you can give your input on how the government is doing.
