A glimpse inside Tinpot Chapel in 1950s

This is a picture of the inside of Swingate Primitive Church, in Kimberley, taken in 1955.

The chapel was built of wood

The church was built of timber in 1890 and the roof and outside walls were clad with corrugated iron sheets.

It was eventually rebuilt in brick and then it was sold off as private property. The church was known in the area as Tinpot Chapel or Tin Tabernacle and DH Lawrence’s brother was a lay preacher there.
