Councillor William Hopkin served the area with distinction

William Hopkin was born on June 12 1862 and a town councillor and county councillor.

William Hopkin, who died in 1951

He was a member of a family associated with the shoemaking trade who had lived in Eastwood since 1805.

William joined the family business aged 18 and through the years became a town councillor and a county councillor where his many years of serving the community were recognised and he was given the title of honorary alderman.

William was also made school governor for the county and for many years he wrote his ‘Rambling Notes’ and ‘Rhymes of truthful bill’ for the Advertiser. he was a good friend of DH Lawrence and encouraged him in his literary career. it was while he was lecturing about Lawrence that he died on december 1, 1951.
