Giltbrook in the early 1900s

This old photo shows how Nottingham Road in Giltbrook, the main road from Kimberley to Eastwood, looked before 1912.

How the main road through the village looked in 1912.

Shortly after this time the road was widened to accommodate the tram, which went from Ripley to Nottingham. The railway line in the foreground of the photo was the mineral line from the New London Colliery near Newthorpe.

At the time this picture was taken, coal wagons passing along the line meant the road had to be closed and hand-controlled crossing gates can be seen in the centre.

To the left of the picture the railway line connected with Digby Colliery before joining the Great Northern line at Digby Junction. It later joined with the Speedwell Colliery line, just beyond the Awsworth viaduct and further on with a line from the Awsworth Colliery.

The houses in the picture were part of the Giltbrook Leatherworks company and known as Tanyard Cottages
