Elizabeth will give a talk, illustrated by objects, based on her research into the community of people who operated the narrowboats which transported goods along the local canals for around 150 years until finally being eclipsed by rail and road as a means of heavy transportation of goods after WWII.
Whilst the focus of the surviving canals is now on leisure activities, this now forgotten community and its infrastructure, which included provision for horses, loading quays and warehouses (and taverns) played an important role in the development of the Erewash Valley and the industries resulting from the Industrial Revolution. Elizabeth's talk will return these people to living memory.
The talk is on Thursday, April 3 at 7.30pm, following the group's AGM at 7pm, at the Kimberley Community Room on Newdigate Street, accessed from the driveway to Kimberley Sports Centre.
There is plenty of parking almost opposite.
Visitors are welcome to attend this talk and a fee of £4 towards expenses is requested.
