Romantic Ben Miller and Lorenzo Garofalo are splashing out £24,000 to turn one of the world’s most luxurious trains into The Love Train for a fairytale trip to Edinburgh.

They will take 40 friends aboard the gleaming 1930s Pullman-style Northern Belle to watch them marry in the glittering ballroom of a five-star floating hotel at Leith next month.

And to make the occasion even more spectacular both they and their guests will dress like characters from F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic Great Gatsby novel, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.

Theatrical producer Ben, 32, explained: “We wanted to do something unique and memorable – although I don’t think either of us quite envisioned the day we’ve crafted!

“Edinburgh is such a beautiful, romantic city in which to get married and we couldn’t think of a better way of getting there than aboard a fabulous train like the Northern Belle.”

Store manager Lorenzo, 45, whose family originally come from Naples in Italy, added: “We didn’t want an off-the-shelf wedding.

“We wanted something that was unique to us, something that captures our sense of adventure and love of history. So we are recreating the glamour and romance of a bygone age.”

Guests are flying in from Italy, Tenerife and even Japan for the ceremony on Thursday, May 15, and the champagne will start flowing as soon as they board the Northern Belle at Liverpool at 7.30am.

Then they will tuck into a three-course brunch during the journey to Edinburgh before a luxury coach transfers them to Leith and the former Lighthouse Board vessel Fingal.

After the ceremony, they will be bussed back to Waverley Station where a piper will serenade them back on board the train for a champagne reception.

Finally, during the journey home, they will be served a magnificent six-course wedding breakfast devised by famous chef Brian Clark, who once cooked for both King Charles and Madonna.

Ben, a former theatre performer, said: “We wanted to create unforgettable memories for our guests, with a day so different to the normal format of a wedding.

“A wedding should be a story of a couple’s life, so it seemed natural to create a wedding with a narrative that allows us and our guests to live their 1930s fantasy.

“The Northern Belle train is known for its elegant décor and gourmet dining as it replicates the romance of travel during the golden age of the 1930s. It is also well loved among the Gay community.

“But this isn’t just a wedding – it’s a production, an experience and a love story brought to life.”

A spokesman for the Northern Belle said: “We are proud and absolutely delighted to be playing a role in helping make Ben and Lorenzo’s special day so memorable.

“We have had several couples get engaged onboard before but this is the first time a couple have got married. Maybe we should rebrand ourselves as The Love Train!”

While Edinburgh is the destination for this trip, the Northern Belle, once part of the iconic Orient Express set-up, will make several journeys from both Edinburgh and Glasgow this year.

Among them will be an excursion to York’s historic Christmas markets and a slap-up Christmas lunch special. For more details, see www.northernbelle.co.uk
