Steph Sherratt, Founder of Breaking Barriers NW, said:

“This year has been a testament to the power of community, resilience and collaboration. Seeing our initiatives flourish and witnessing the direct impact on families reassures us that we are making a real difference. Market Place has become more than just a location. It is a sanctuary for those who need it most.”

Over the past year Breaking Barriers NW has made a significant impact. Projects delivered from Market Place have provided direct, hands-on support to 80 families and 120 children and young people, creating safe spaces where they can engage in tailored activities, build friendships and access much-needed services.

More than 1,340 SEND children and young people have been supported in person through a range of initiatives, from one-to-one sessions and group activities to advocacy and guidance for navigating educational and healthcare systems. By providing individualised care and inclusive opportunities, Breaking Barriers NW continues to foster a sense of belonging and confidence among the young people it serves.

A vital part of Breaking Barriers NW’s presence in Market Place is its Sensory Room, which has welcomed 956 visitors over the past year. This dedicated space offers a calming and inclusive environment for children and young people with sensory processing needs, providing them with a safe retreat within the bustling shopping centre. With the support of Market Place, sensory play sessions and sensory therapy sessions have been delivered, offering vital engagement for families who may otherwise struggle to find such tailored support. Market Place’s commitment to hosting this essential facility has helped make the centre more inclusive, ensuring that customers of all abilities have access to a supportive and accommodating environment.

Breaking Barriers NW has also facilitated 15 disabled volunteer placements and supported 8 disabled Duke of Edinburgh participants, ensuring that individuals with disabilities have opportunities to gain work experience, develop new skills and engage in meaningful activities that foster independence, resilience and self-confidence. These initiatives not only empower participants but also challenge societal barriers around disability and employment, reinforcing the belief that every individual deserves the opportunity to thrive.

Breaking Barriers NW is launching a new holiday opportunity for SEND families. The initiative involves a 6-berth caravan with an awning, available for families to book from May to September. The fully accessible caravan will cater to a variety of needs and includes a welcome pack. The project aims to ensure that no family is excluded due to financial constraints.

CBT support for adults with anxiety and depression has provided 260 hours of help delivered by trained students. Breaking Barriers NW has also launched peer-to-peer parent support groups, one-to-one listening services and drop-in sessions as an iThrive partner for another 3 years.

Nicola M Shawcroft, General Manager of Market Place, added: “Breaking Barriers NW exemplifies the true meaning of community spirit. Their work in transforming redundant retail space into a hub of support and inclusion is inspiring. Market Place is proud to be home to such an invaluable organisation and we look forward to supporting their continued growth.”

Breaking Barriers NW remains dedicated to empowering SEND families, providing vital services and leading positive change in Bolton.
