‘It brought us closer together,’ said Ted Bullen. ‘I was proud of my completion time of 1 hour 19 minutes which put me in the top 22% of competing males. Glasgow was my first event as you must be 16 to participate.’
‘Ted’s been totally committed to his training since starting HYROX two years ago,’ said Natalie Crompton who coaches Ted at Kings Gym in Bury. Dad Simon got him into it. I’ve been training him for six months now. Sometimes he’s there at six in the morning he’s that keen. Everyone can see how his confidence has soared, and all are proud of his achievement, but most of all Ted himself.’
‘HYROX is an excellent way of keeping fit and demonstrating progress in competition,’ continued Ted. ‘You run a kilometre then work at a fitness station. This is repeated eight times. The stations include varying activities requiring you to push, pull, carry or throw and include such rowing, burpee jumping and sled push and pull. The running is done indoors. Anyone can do HYROX. Just purchase your ticket. You can do solo, same sex doubles or mixed doubles. Weight doesn’t matter it’s structured in age categories like 16-24. It suits me as I’m an active person who loves to develop his fitness and enjoys motocross. I’ve got GCSEs coming up and HYROX keeps my mental health in a good place. It was great to do the Glasgow event with dad and he did ok too. My gran Kath who lives with us on the farm was pleased with how HYROX has brought us together.’
Bullen senior commented that ‘HYROX has benefitted my son’s outlook on life giving him goals. Ted takes his nutrition seriously, constantly assessing what he’s eating and researching good ways to fuel for his performance. He’d rather spend Friday nights at a HYROX class with his dad and coach than be out with friends.’
‘Ted has two more races planned in London and Cardiff,’ added coach Crompton. ‘He’s a pleasure to coach and an inspiration. It’s our mission now to qualify for the HYROX world championships in 2026. Ted’s dedication really shone through in Glasgow. Ted Bullen can become an elite athlete.’
