The Trust has introduced a range of practical and creative strategies to support early writing development. These include innovative outdoor learning programmes that build physical readiness for writing, and book-making initiatives that empower children to become authors of their own stories.
At Rudheath Primary Academy, for example, the implementation of the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme has transformed break times into vital opportunities for skill building. The school has introduced play equipment and spaces, including a large sandpit, that support children’s gross and fine motor development.
Rudheath Primary Academy’s Principal, Andrew Ross, states: “We have noticed the positive impact OPAL has had on the children’s development.
“Increased freedom has fostered creativity, teamwork, problem-solving skills, and a greater ability to assess and manage risks independently.”
At Lyndhurst Primary School and Manor Green Academy, a new book-making approach has brought creativity and purpose back to early writing. Drawing inspiration from The Writing For Pleasure Centre, children in the Early Years Foundation Stage now write and illustrate their own books, connecting writing to their personal ideas and experiences.
These efforts reflect Focus-Trust’s broader curriculum and development priorities: slowing down to meet children where they are, reconnecting writing with joy and voice, and embedding developmentally informed approaches across the Early Years and beyond.
Anna Hackett, Focus-Trust’s Curriculum and Professional Learning Lead, explains: “Over the past few years, we’ve seen a real shift in childhood experiences, including noticeable gaps in physical development.
“This isn’t just about the effects of COVID-19, it’s about recognising that the world children are growing up in has changed.
“Their experiences outside of school vary widely, and we must respond accordingly. We continue to reflect on and adjust our approach to ensure every child has the best possible start.
“We’re seeing a renewed sense of purpose around writing, it’s beautiful to see, staff are excited, and children are proud of their writing.”
Looking ahead, the Trust will continue to deepen professional learning for staff, embed inclusive and research-driven practice, and ask the most important question: What do our children need right now to thrive?
Focus-Trust is a primary school trust based in the North-West and West Yorkshire, with a vision of providing great schools at the heart of communities where all children flourish.
