More than 500 glass slides chronicling Eva Hasell’s pioneering Sunday School Mission work will go under the hammer at Antiques and Auction’s April 8 sale.

Born in 1886 at Dalemain mansion near Penrith, Eva Hasell, saw a need ‘or calling’ to undertake missionary work in Canada.  She founded the Canadian Caravan Mission touring Western Canada in the 1920’s in a motor caravan.

The travels took place in summer and upon her return to Penrith she would spend the winter lecturing and fund-raising for her next trip. These funds would pay for the erection of new churches and, as well as offering religious education she would collect clothes, books, pens, paper etc for educating the children of settlers. All were welcome.

There is a tale of a Canadian first nation chief travelling for two days in a canoe to meet her. An accomplished mechanic she could keep her vehicles on the road, which was just as well when out in the Canadian wilderness.

The glass slides cover four decades and show views of Canada, traditional log cabins, road building and even a royal visit by King George III. Awarded an MBE for her services to the people of the West, she died in 1974 aged 87.

The auction will take place at Antiques and Auctions, 2 White Lune Avenue, Morecambe, LA3 3ED on Tuesday, April 8 at 10am.  Call Garth Drinkall on 07376 988222 to view the slides Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm or online at www.antiquesandauctions.co.uk
