Fourteen members of Cadent’s North West engineering team swapped pipework for demolition tools as they volunteered at Claire House Children’s Hospice in Liverpool, who provide palliative care services for children in Merseyside and Cheshire.
The team dismantled unused outhouse structures and cleared waste materials from the charity’s gardens, making way for a new outdoor space for children and families to enjoy.
Cadent, the region’s gas distribution network, encourages colleagues to give back to their communities by offering more than 1,000 North West employees two paid volunteering days each year.
Now in its fourth year, the scheme celebrates National Volunteers’ Week (Monday 2 – Sunday 8 June) by reaching a major milestone: 3,000 colleague volunteering days have been completed across company’s network footprint.
Claire House Children’s Hospice also benefits from being one of 21 charities selected for support through the Cadent Foundation Community Fund. This initiative enables colleagues to contribute through both fundraising and volunteering from 2024 until March 2026.
To date, more than £200,000 has been raised for Community Fund charities, with further fundraising activities planned to grow the fund even further.
Graham Davies, North West Customer Operations Supervisor who nominated Claire House to the Cadent Foundation Community Fund, shared his motivation: “The work they do for children, providing critical care and respite, is amazing. Being a father myself, I couldn’t think of a better charity to support.”
Paula Steer, Director of Network for the North West at Cadent, spoke about the importance of volunteering: “We work in the hearts of our communities, which intrinsically links us to the people we serve. When we recognise there’s more we can do, this scheme allows us to give back.
“The two paid volunteering days we offer colleagues are a way for them to support charities and organisations that matter to them. I encourage every one of our people to use these days to make a difference.”
