On Thursday 8th May Care UK’s Addington Heights, on Milne Park West, and Heavers Court, on Selhurst Road, are welcoming local people to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day with their own 1940s-themed celebrations.
VE Day was celebrated on 8th May 1945, after Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio that the war in Europe had come to an end. This emotional news sparked celebrations across the country, with many taking to the streets for spontaneous parties.
Addington Heights will be hosting their celebration from 2pm-5pm, with guests invited to embrace the spirit of the 1940s with residents at a themed tea party on the home’s balcony, whilst listening to classics from the decade.
Over at Heavers Court, the team has been hard at work organising their own special commemorative event, which will take place from 12 noon. Guests and residents will enjoy a delicious lunch and stacks of cupcakes, as well as a live performance from the Hayward Sisters and a special talk and slide show from members of the Royal British Legion.
Jacqueline Johnson, Home Manager at Heavers Court, said: “We’re always grateful for an opportunity to strengthen our relationships with the community, so we’re looking forward to welcoming people for a special event marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
“This is an incredibly important milestone for many residents, and we’re keen to honour all those involved. Music is a fantastic way to bring back memories for older people and a wonderful way to bring communities together; we can’t wait to get everyone’s toes tapping with a special performance from the Hayward Sisters. I think a singalong is on the cards!”
Ashura Mwilima, Home Manager at Addington Heights, added: “It has been great hearing residents sharing their cherished stories from wartime Britain – it’s been so inspiring to hear their experiences and learn from one another.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming new and old faces into Addington Heights as we mark such a significant moment in history with a wonderful tea party.”
