OCL Vision secures major investment to drive national expansion

Leading London eye care provider OCL Vision has received a multi-million-pound investment from BGF as it sets sights on UK-wide growth.

OCL Vision, a prominent private ophthalmology group based in London, has secured significant backing from BGF, one of the UK and Ireland’s most active growth capital investors. The funding marks a strategic move aimed at expanding the company’s clinical footprint beyond the capital and into new regions across the UK.

Since its founding in 2018 by eye surgeons Ali Mearza, Allon Barsam, and Romesh Angunawela, OCL Vision has grown from a single clinic to three locations in Marylebone, Kensington, and Elstree. With more than 70 staff, including 12 surgeons, the group performs nearly 4,000 procedures annually and regularly scores well for patient satisfaction.

Investment to support expansion and recruitment

The investment from BGF will support the rollout of additional clinics nationwide and help the company expand its clinical team. According to OCL Vision CEO Nicholas Rudge, who took on the role in January 2024, the capital injection will also enable enhanced marketing and the adoption of advanced medical technologies.

“We believe there is a significant market opportunity to establish a leading premium ophthalmology brand across the UK,” said Rudge. “This funding allows us to scale responsibly, continuing to invest in our people, technology, and the patient experience.”

Responding to growing demand

OCL Vision’s growth coincides with increased demand for private ophthalmic care, as NHS wait times prompt patients to seek alternatives and private hospitals scale back eye care services.

The group has also seen a rise in demand for aesthetic eye procedures, prompting recent staff expansions.

The company reported double-digit growth in patient numbers and revenue in 2024 and was recognised at the Laing Buisson Awards, winning ‘Best Healthcare Outcomes’. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has also acknowledged OCL Vision’s commitment to patient care.

Backing from BGF

BGF investor Alistair Brew described OCL Vision as “a fast-growing healthcare business that has demonstrated exceptional clinical outcomes and a strong commercial trajectory.”

“Our investment aligns with BGF’s commitment to supporting innovative, high-potential businesses,” said Brew. “We look forward to working with the OCL team as they scale operations and meet rising demand for quality eye care.”

With a solid foundation in London and growing national ambitions, OCL Vision is set on becoming a major player in UK private healthcare.
