Care UK’s Buchanan Court, on Sudbury Hill, pulled out all the stops to commemorate the poignant anniversary of Victory in Europe, and hosted a 1940s-themed garden party with a lively performance by Mike Marandi, who provided the perfect atmosphere for a dance and a sing-along.
Meanwhile, a special history talk was presented by John Jameson. John shared his extensive knowledge on the history of VE Day and discussed how teamwork was vital to overcoming the challenges faced during World War II.
On the day, guests also enjoyed buffet-style refreshments from the wartime era and traditional English board games, including darts and snakes and ladders.
Also in attendance at the special commemorative event was VIP guest Councillor Salim Chowdhury, the Mayor of Harrow. The Mayor gave a reflective speech and drew the raffle, with proceeds being donated to the Royal British Legion.
Resident Maureen Sherwin, 78, a lifelong member of the Royal British Legion, reflected on such a unique period in history, saying: “VE day celebrates how nations came together, showing unity and cooperation during the hardest times.”
Laurentiu Lordachescu, Home Manager at Buchanan Court, added: “Here at Buchanan Court, we had a fantastic time celebrating VE Day 80 with residents, their families and the wonderful Harrow community. Everyone was in high spirits as we marked this momentous occasion, but we also took time to reflect on the poignancy of the milestone.
“I’d like to thank the Mayor of Harrow for joining us, and the entire team for making this celebration possible, as well as all the guests who joined us at Buchanan Court for our party.
“It was a privilege to honour this important anniversary and to see the residents enjoying the Mike Marandi performance, some delicious food and the company of the community as they shared their memories of times gone by. It’s so important to enable residents to foster meaningful connections with the local community and for us to host nostalgic events that can prompt reminiscence, so our VE Day celebration was a roaring success.”
