Experts agree that physical exercise is a fantastic way to boost your physical and mental wellbeing and recover from any health challenges.
Local man Steve* who has taken part in the scheme, shares his thoughts: “I exercised at the park almost every day that I was using. It was a way of justifying my bad habit – how bad could things really be if I was still getting a workout in?
“In truth, my drug problem meant that I wasn’t making any progress. I wasn’t getting stronger or fitter. When I stopped using, I couldn’t go to the park anymore. It was also where I would use and the association was too strong to risk it.
“Getting the free membership at Better was massive. With a gym, a pool, and a sauna, it was exciting enough for me to get out the house and back into exercise habits. I’ve gone on average 4-5 times a week and have started going to yoga classes.”
Ben* adds: “As part of my Aftercare Programme, I was offered the opportunity of 3 months free gym membership between April and June 2023. My experience was great. It helped me to feel great as I continue my recovery from alcohol addiction.”
Leisure centres in Lewisham are run by charitable social enterprise GLL under the ‘Better’ brand.
Matthew Houghton, GLL’s Community Sports Manager in the region, comments: “We're pleased to be working in partnership Lewisham Council and their service provider Waythrough to offer free passes to people who have overcome addiction as exercise is a fantastic way for people to improve their wellbeing and overcome any health challenges they face.”
