Primary school pupils gain a four-legged friend in Nero

Pupils at Drew Primary School, in Silvertown, are welcoming a new member of the team – Nero the support dog.

Nero the Support Dog

After passing his bespoke dog mentor training, Nero the dog has become a very important member of Drew Primary School’s pastoral support team and is now wagging his tail with excitement at getting started in supporting pupils’ learning.

Teachers at the academy, part of Learning in Harmony Trust, look forward to the support that Nero will bring for pupils’ learning, with research showing that support dogs can bring significant benefits for pupils’ personal development and overall wellbeing.

Nero’s owner, Drew’s Safeguarding Officer, Jo-Anne Green, and his second handler, Learning Mentor Tracy Leahy, have been slowly introducing Nero to his new school and excited pupils. As he gets used to school life, Nero is learning how to greet people and taking part in a ‘Puppy Club’ where pupils can get to know and play games with their new furry friend.

He has already been a huge success with pupils, with Year 2 pupil Dottie-Mai saying, “Nero makes me feel happy. If I am worried about something, I spend time with Nero and he helps me be ready for my learning back in the classroom. I know I can talk to him, or Ms Green - or anyone!”

Over time, Nero will start his work as a ‘Dog Mentor,’ following planned sessions to support individual pupils or joining lessons to listen to pupils’ read and learn.

Dulcie Sharp, head teacher at Drew Primary School, said: “All staff at Drew Primary School are really passionate about children’s mental and physical health as well as their academic progress.

"Having Nero join our pastoral support team will further support children’s emotional development, helping to teach compassion and acceptance from others as well as helping to relieve anxiety.”
