Brockwell Lido celebrates Local History and Community Month with giant outdoor colouring event

Brockwell Lido marked Local History and Community Month in vibrant fashion, inviting children and families from across the local area to participate in a large-scale outdoor colouring experience, bringing the site’s rich history and heritage to life.

The finished masterpiece coloured in by members of the local community.

The centrepiece of the celebration was a giant illustration of Brockwell Lido: Then and Now, developed in collaboration with Colour Your Streets. Inspired by the Lido’s history and its importance to the local community, the unique artwork was transformed into an interactive mural coloured in by children throughout the day.

The initiative is part of Brockwell Lido’s ongoing commitment to honouring its place as a cherished local landmark, while engaging new generations with its story. Opened in 1937, the Grade II-listed Lido has been a symbol of community spirit, and the outdoor colouring event offered a creative and inclusive way for young residents to explore this legacy while making their mark on it.

“We wanted to create something special for Local History and Community Month that reflected both the history and future of Brockwell Lido,” said Scarlett Hayward, General Manager at Brockwell Lido. “Seeing children from the local community colouring in scenes from the past and present, side by side, was such a wonderful moment. It’s a celebration not just of the Lido’s story, but of the community that keeps it alive.”

The event also launched the new “Colour in Brockwell Lido” book, a beautifully illustrated colouring book for all ages. The bespoke book was created by Colour Your Streets, a Brixton-based family business founded by BBC broadcaster Emma Barnett and her husband Jeremy Weil.
