Muslim Aid marks 40 years of global humanitarian impact with bold new vision

Muslim Aid, one of the UK’s leading international humanitarian organisations, is celebrating 40 years of lifesaving aid and development, having supported millions across 70+ countries. As it enters its fifth decade, the charity is not only reflecting on its legacy and launch by Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens), but it will also be launching a bold new vision—expanding its impact globally while intensifying efforts to support communities in the UK.

From its origins in 1985, when the charity was founded to respond to humanitarian crises in Africa, Muslim Aid has grown into a global force for good. In 2023 alone, it delivered 134 projects across 19 countries, investing £12.3 million to support 4.1 million people worldwide.

To mark this milestone and for the first time in the charity’s history, Muslim Aid is rolling out a UK year-long programme of events and initiatives designed to engage diverse communities, promote sustainable development, and tackle urgent global and domestic challenges.

Highlights include:

  • A Transformative Waqf (Endowment) Initiative – Unveiled at its prestigious 39th-anniversary gala, this visionary programme is set to drive sustainable development for underprivileged communities in the UK and beyond.
  • Financial Literacy Seminars & Mentorship Programmes – Equipping individuals with the skills to build a better future.
  • Interfaith Collaborations & Climate Advocacy – Strengthening partnerships for a more just and sustainable world.
  • A Flagship Anniversary Gala in November – Celebrating four decades of impact while shaping the future of humanitarian aid.

Khalid Javid, CEO of Muslim Aid, commented, “Our 40th anniversary is more than a celebration—it’s a call to action. From our early response to crises in Afghanistan, Palestine, and Bangladesh to our record-breaking humanitarian efforts today, Muslim Aid has been a lifeline to millions. But as global and domestic challenges evolve, so must we. Our vision for the future is clear: expand our impact, empower communities, enable positive change and remain a force for good wherever we are needed.”

Founder Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens) added, "For four decades, Muslim Aid has embodied the spirit of compassion and service, reaching out to humanity in need, across the globe. Our journey has been guided by the principles of love and community consciousness, and the commitment to make a positive difference in the lives of others."

With the current cost-of-living crisis deepening in the UK, Muslim Aid is intensifying its domestic relief efforts, ensuring that its humanitarian mission serves those in need—both abroad and at home.

As Muslim Aid enters this landmark year, it continues to evolve, innovate, and expand its reach to meet the ever-growing demands of humanitarian work.
