Southall Black Sisters receives £2,000 donation to help support black, minoritised and migrant victim-survivors of abuse

Southall Black Sisters (SBS) has received a £2,000 donation to assist it in its endeavour to tackle domestic abuse and other forms of violence against women and girls (VAWG) perpetrated against Black, minoritised and migrant women.

Donation - (from top) Chancerygate's Amanda Walker and Ada Ioannidis-Mann; Magrock's Becca Creighton and Kylie Boarer; and Shakila Taranum Maan and Frankie Favia from Southall Black Sisters

Urban logistics developer Chancerygate and construction contractor Magrock made the donation. The companies are currently working together to deliver the 90,000 sq ft Harlequin Business Park on Southall Lane.

SBS is a ‘by and for’ Black, minoritised and migrant women’s organisation providing holistic specialist support in relation to all forms of domestic abuse, sexual abuse and honour-based abuse (HBA) including forced marriage, female genital mutilation (FGM) and other harmful practices.

More than 60 per cent of SBS’ service users are migrant women with No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF). Approximately 70 per cent  of cases involve multiple perpetrators and relate to HBA.

The charity combines crisis intervention work with long-term advocacy, policy and campaigning work that is informed by its frontline experience.

The money will enable SBS to continue providing specialist support to Black, minoritised and migrant victim-survivors and assist in paying for service users’ legal fees.

Commenting on the donation, Selma Taha, Executive Director, SBS said: “We are grateful for the donation from Chancerygate and Magrock. Every contribution to our relentless fight to end VAWG, and to ensure that Black, minoritised and migrant women who are among the most marginalised with the least state protections are not left behind, is invaluable.

“Chancerygate and Magrock are making a real difference to the lives of the victim-survivors we support.”

Founded in 1979, SBS is a holistic women’s resource centre, providing community-based services including helpline advice services, advocacy, counselling, peer support group work, and English language classes.

SBS’ advocacy casework informs its campaigning and policy and research work, which has a national impact in changing social, cultural, and religious norms, and in influencing legal and policy reform and practice.

Chancerygate Foundation director, Amanda Walker, said: “Southall Black Sisters is a fantastic initiative with a focus on helping minoritised women who are in need of advice and guidance.”

“It is a pleasure to support the charity through this donation and help its team to continue to provide specialist guidance for women who need their services.”

Founded in 1995, Chancerygate is the UK’s largest multi-unit urban logistics property developer and asset manager and the only one operating nationwide. The company has offices in London, Warrington, Birmingham and Bristol, as well as in Europe in Madrid, Dublin, Lisbon and Paris.

Magrock’s business operations director, Kylie Boarer, said: “We are very pleased to make this donation to Southall Black Sisters. The charity is truly a worthy cause and it is our honour to support in helping those in need of advice and guidance.”
