Percentages fuel military might, but public resolve is paramount

Winston Churchill once said: "We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender."

Let those words settle, as the conflict rhetoric intensifies, we must ask has our nation the sheer resilience to protect the sovereignty of ourselves and our allies? Or will we fold through fear and divide, allowing the fight for freedom to fade from existence.

Day by day the question of global conflict is shifting from not a question of if but when

The UK government's recent Strategic Defence Review highlights the systemic threats militarily we could inevitably face, from cyber attacks to a full scale ground offensive. Potentially dangerous times are ahead. Military Spending has since become the benchmark of a countries readiness for conflict, with percentages of GDP making headlines. The findings are both unsettling and worrying. However I think the review entirely misses a crucial point, Public Resolve.

2025 is a year dominated by headlines, the phrase "Broken Britain" is more prevalent than ever. As I see it, it is not simply the establishment that is broken but the public unity behind it.

I am 18 years old. I am proud to be British. I am forever grateful to those who selflessly protected the freedoms they held close to their hearts so that today we can relish in this great democracy.

I am equally often both disappointed and perplexed to why a recent poll finds across my generation less than 11% of 18-40 year olds would volunteer to defend this nation should we find ourselves under imminent threat of invasion.

To this point. It’s not hard to see why over the last decade global instability is on the rise. For those with expansionist ideology western division is the perfect distraction for increased aggression.

Young people make up the cornerstone of our Nations future, our security, economic prosperity. Together all of us. Regardless of age contribute to what it means to be British.

As we learn more about increased global threats from the continued invasion of Ukraine to the military threats to Taiwanese sovereignty, the true litmus test for us not only as a nation but for the world is how we come together. In one joint endeavour. The protection of the freedoms that ancestors before us fought for.

This issue throughout history, has proved through moments of crisis and disarray we have come together and fostered remarkable bouts of public unity.

Look abroad from one Commonwealth Nation to another. Where in recent months annexation threats have both had tremendous shifts in political outcomes but more importantly has lead to nationwide support with one message.

It was also less than a century ago that together we stood up collectively against the rise of Nazi Germany. "We shall never surrender" - Churchill. This mentality along with the brave actions of those who defended our nation have together created the freedom and democracy we so often take for granted.

As we continue to navigate through turbulent times let's make one message clear. 2025 merits change. The sort seen once in a generation. Day by day, hour by hour. The world finds itself treading deeper and deeper into uncharted waters. Without both collective thinking and strong will, we risk suffering the consequences of inaction.

If you've made it this far. You likely embody what it means to be British, Individually we are strong, But together we can continue to uphold the same freedoms we rely on for generations to come.

In the fight against those who seek to disrupt the world order we must remember.

One Mission, One Message. One Movement
