This week is National Apprenticeship Week (February 10-16), with a wide range of Ilford organisations announcing opportunities for people.

At Specsavers, 19-year-old optical assistant Aleesha is seven months into her Level 3 apprenticeship, which she’ll complete in December this year.

Aleesha said: “I can honestly say it’s been such an amazing journey so far. Learning on the job has been the best way to develop my skills because I get to apply everything I’m taught in real time, and I’m constantly learning something new.

“What makes it even better is the supportive team I work with. Everyone is so knowledgeable and always willing to help, which makes a huge difference when you’re training. There’s such a positive atmosphere in the store - we work hard, but we also have fun, and that makes every day enjoyable.

“If anyone is thinking about doing an apprenticeship, I would 100% recommend it. You get hands-on experience and build confidence in a real working environment while getting paid. It’s such a great way to start your career, and I’m so glad I chose this path.”

After completing her apprenticeship, Aleesha aims to advance her career, aspiring to become a dispensing optician or practice manager.

Ali Teladia is the store manager at Specsavers Ilford and she oversees Aleesha’s development.

Ali said: “From the start, Aleesha has demonstrated exceptional dedication, skill, and a strong work ethic. She has quickly mastered complex tasks and shown remarkable innovation, improving processes that have saved the team time and resources.

“Her commitment to personal growth is inspiring, always seeking feedback and embracing challenges to expand her knowledge. Aleesha’s positive attitude and leadership qualities have made her an invaluable team member, earning respect from peers and managers alike.

“Her professionalism has also shone through at community and industry events, making her an excellent ambassador for our organisation and the apprenticeship programme.

“Aleesha is an outstanding apprentice who embodies the values of dedication, innovation, and teamwork. Her achievements, growth, and contributions truly deserve to be celebrated.”

The Specsavers apprenticeship scheme is open to anyone aged 16 and over and runs for between 15 to 18 months. Upon completion, apprentices achieve a nationally recognised Level 3 Optical Assistant qualification accredited by the Institute for Apprenticeships.
