End of an Era: Harringtons Pie & Mash closes its doors in Tooting
Harringtons Pie & Mash, one of London’s last traditional pie and mash shops, served its final meal Saturday, marking the end of an era for Tooting and beyond.
A fixture in the community since 1908, the shop has been a cherished institution for generations, offering a taste of London’s working-class heritage.
With full access throughout the day, I captured the final moments of this historic establishment—regulars queuing for one last plate, staff preparing the traditional fare, and emotional farewells as the doors closed for good.
For many, Harringtons wasn’t just a place to eat; it was a piece of London’s identity. “I’ve been coming here since I was a child,” said one long-time customer. “It’s heartbreaking to see it go.”
The decline of pie and mash shops has been a slow but steady trend, with rising costs and changing food preferences taking their toll. While some institutions have adapted or relocated, Harringtons’ closure signals another chapter lost in London’s culinary history.

As the shutters came down for the final time, there was a sense of both sadness and gratitude—for the memories made, the meals shared, and the legacy that will live on in the hearts of those who walked through its doors.
A massive thank you to the wonderful Bev, Jasmin, Dave (chef), and the rest of the family.
