Vaping, fire risk, and the hidden crisis: Why fire safety must be a business priority in 2025

Running a business in 2025 means spinning countless plates — from cybersecurity threats to staffing pressures, it’s easy to see how fire safety might slip down the agenda. But that oversight could have dangerous consequences — especially in light of an alarming new trend. A threat that’s not only growing but catching many businesses completely off guard — vape-related fires.

These incidents have surged by 348% since 2020 (Electric Tobacconist), now equating to nearly one fire every other day in the UK.

With vaping more popular than ever, the devices themselves have become a hidden hazard in offices, retail spaces, hospitality venues and beyond. And yet, many organisations remain underprepared.

Fire Safety: The Most Overlooked Business Risk?

According to new research from  Spy Alarms, specialists in fire and security systems, businesses are investing in protection — just not the right kind.

  • 59% of UK businesses are putting their money into CCTV, intruder alerts and access control
  • But only 39% are doing the same for fire safety systems

That’s an alarming gap when you consider the average cost of a commercial fire is £78,000.

And now, vapes are introducing a new level of unpredictability to this threat landscape.

Why Vapes Pose a Unique Fire Hazard

Unlike traditional fire risks, vape-related fires are often unexpected and hard to detect until it's too late. Their lithium-ion batteries can be volatile — especially when:

  • Charged with the wrong cables
  • Left plugged in overnight
  • Stored near heat or metal
  • Damaged or leaking
  • Thrown in general waste

Vape Fire Safety: What Businesses Must Do

To reduce risk, businesses should include vape safety into their fire prevention plans:

Use Manufacturer-Approved Chargers Only

Avoid cheap or third-party alternatives.

Don’t Charge Overnight or Unattended

Especially outside of working hours.

Avoid Overcharging

Unplug as soon as charging is complete.

Store Devices Safely

Keep vapes away from radiators, direct sunlight, and metal objects.

Dispose of Damaged Vapes Properly

Never use swollen, leaking, or overheating devices

Implement Workplace Vape Policies

  • Define designated charging areas
  • Keep away from flammable materials
  • Incorporate vape risks into fire training
  • Update fire risk assessments accordingly

Upgrade Fire Safety Systems

Ensure smoke alarms, extinguishers, and suppression systems are maintained and in the right locations.

Educate Staff and Customers

Use posters, briefings, or email campaigns to raise awareness.

As fire risks evolve, businesses can no longer afford to ignore them. From vape-related incidents to outdated systems, the cost of inaction is too high.

Fire safety is not just about ticking a compliance box — it's a critical investment in your team, your assets, and your long-term resilience.
