Immersive toilet experience at Bluewater shines light on hygiene poverty crisis facing children

This May, visitors to Bluewater Shopping Centre are invited to experience something truly unexpected — and deeply moving.

Visitors to Bluewater Shopping Centre in Dartford encounter a striking installation in the men’s restroom as part of charity In Kind Direct’s new immersive campaign to highlight the escalating hygiene poverty crisis among children in Britain. The poster forms part of a powerful experience where audio experiences of children echo through the space - sharing the realities of going without basic hygiene essentials and urging the public to take action. The campaign runs from 2nd - 11th May 2025.

WHEN: 2nd – 11th May 2025

WHERE: Male and female public restrooms on Upper Thames Walk, Bluewater Shopping Centre, Dartford

COST: Free to attend

Charity In Kind Direct, in partnership with Bluewater is hosting a powerful immersive audio installation in one of its public restrooms, giving shoppers a rare opportunity to hear the real experiences of children living in hygiene poverty. This unique event shines a light on the hidden crisis affecting over 1 million children across Britain — many of whom are missing school, feeling isolated, or suffering in silence because they don’t have access to basic hygiene essentials like shampoo, deodorant, or clean clothes.

Set in a space where hygiene is often taken for granted, the installation offers a moment of reflection and empathy — and encourages visitors to stop, listen and take action.

Don’t miss this thought-provoking experience that brings unheard stories into the public eye. We can’t do this alone but together we can end hygiene poverty for children.
