Zego launches app-based black box insurance to help young drivers in Manchester and across the UK cut soaring costs

As insurance premiums continue to rise for new motorists, UK insurance provider Zego has launched a new black box insurance policy aimed at helping young drivers take back control — with a particularly strong relevance for Manchester, where young drivers face some of the highest car insurance costs outside London.

Zego, a UK-based car insurance company for new drivers , has long served professional drivers in Greater Manchester through its private hire insurance products. With one of the largest customer bases in the area among Uber and Bolt drivers, Zego is now expanding into the SDP (social, domestic and pleasure) market to support everyday young motorists with its newest product: Zego Sense.

“In cities like Manchester, where insurance quotes for 17-year-olds can exceed £4,000, we knew we had to offer something different,” said Sten Saar, CEO and co-founder of Zego.

“We’ve already helped thousands of private hire drivers in the North West save money. Now, with Zego Sense, we’re doing the same for young people who just want to get on the road.”

A better kind of black box insurance

Zego Sense is a modern black box insurance product — but without the physical box. Instead, it uses a smartphone app to monitor driving behaviour including speed, braking, cornering and phone usage. The safer you drive, the better your driver score — and the lower your renewal price.

Unlike traditional black box policies, Zego Sense:

  • Requires no hardware or installation
  • Works entirely through your phone
  • Gives live feedback and driving insights
  • Comes with fully comprehensive SDP cover
  • Has no curfews or mileage caps

Recent internal data shows 92% of Zego Sense customers paid less at renewal, showing that good driving habits are rewarded directly with real savings.

Why this matters in Manchester

Drivers in Manchester and surrounding areas are often charged higher premiums due to local accident and claim rates. According to national statistics, drivers under 25 still account for around 20% of serious road casualties, despite being only 7% of licence holders.

With telematics-based policies like Zego Sense, there’s a chance to change that — giving young drivers the chance to prove they’re safer than their postcode or age group suggests.

“We’re proud to have a large driver community in Manchester, especially through our Uber private hire insurance product,” said Saar.

“Now we’re bringing the same smart, fair and tech-driven approach to car insurance for everyday young drivers.”
