David Ramage: King's Church, Motherwell: A lesson from looking back at 60

The end of April was a personal milestone as I celebrated a big birthday that sets a course for some major changes. It’s a kind of weird scenario being 60 as you remember back to those younger days when you felt that anyone being 60 was considered old, however, now you are that age, you feel that 60 is quite young!

Look back from 60

I suppose there are certain times and seasons in life that cause us to pause and reflect on life. As I’ve thought about life going forward it’s also been a time to reflect back and so I’d like to share a lesson that I’ve picked up over the years.

A Key life Lesson - If you are looking to win in life, then be the first to serve!

I love this quote "If serving is below you, leadership is beyond you" which is often attributed to Michael Hyatt or Bishop Dale Bronner.

I’ve found throughout my life that those who keep a humble attitude are the ones who are always able to say yes to whatever opportunity comes their way. Now there are those opportunities that will lead to recognition or maybe even some kind of promotion and those are fairly easy ones to say yes too.

However, I’m talking about those times when an opportunity is behind the scenes and not noticeable and in fact can actually lead to the promotion of others. Those who can say yes in those situations are those for whom serving is an attitude of heart and not something to benefit from.

Our overarching life goal as a Christian is to be like Jesus and his essential nature was that of a servant. Hear him reflect that when teaching his disciples, "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45. One of my favourite bible passages, Philippians 2:1-11, drives this point further home, here’s a snippet from there, “..he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant..” (v7)

So here’s an encouragement today, wherever you are just look to serve others and see what happens.

Remember today, you are deeply loved by God!
