Free festival to offer baby advice

A group offering parents free help and support before and after childbirth is holding a festival in Portchester.

Volunteers are ready for the festival

Members of Informed Pregnancy Birth and Beyond will stage the event at Portchester Community Centre from 10am-1pm on Saturday May 17.

The festival is free to enter, with a small charge for parents who wish to attend one or more of the series of talks that will be held.

These will include advice from a midwife about how to work with your body and baby during birth.

A specialist physiotherapist will give advice on how to care for your pelvic floor from pregnancy and beyond.

There will also be talks on evidence-based support for the whole family’s sleep and suggestions on how to cope when your baby doesn’t want to be laid down.

Informed Pregnancy Birth and Beyond is a local not for profit organisation which provides free support groups for expectant and new parents in south-east Hampshire.

Fareham and Gosport Group co-facilitator Elizabeth Staunton Acheson said successful festivals had previously been held in Milton, Cosham, Fareham and Southsea.

‘At our festivals you can expect to find a range of local professionals offering goods and services aimed at expectant and new families’ she said.

‘This includes doulas, antenatal support such as yoga, hypnobirthing and antenatal classes. There are people who provide postnatal services such as babywearing consultants, infant feeding support, and classes for parents and babies.’

All talks can be booked through eventbrite.co.uk and there is a discount for booking the whole series.

‘Retailers will be selling things that new families really need. We choose our exhibitors carefully and they can attend by invitation only’ said Elizabeth.

She said hot or cold drinks and snacks would be available at the venue and added that children were very welcome at all of our events.

‘The highlight of our events is always our amazing raffle, with prizes including brand new baby carriers, lovely treats, and sessions with local professionals’ said Elizabeth. ‘You don’t have to attend the event to enter the raffle and you can find it through our social media.’
