Local author and editor Ken Preston is inviting aspiring writers from across the West Midlands to join his brand-new creative writing workshop series, The Art of the Short Story, launching this September at Kingswinford Library.

The 10-month workshop will guide writers through the craft of short fiction — from developing compelling characters and plot to finding their own unique voice. Each monthly session will include writing prompts, group discussion, and feedback, all in a friendly, supportive environment.

At the end of the series, participants will have the opportunity to see their work published in a printed anthology of original short stories.

“Short stories are like secret worlds waiting to be unlocked,” says Ken Preston. “The Art of the Short Story is designed to help writers at any level find their voice, build their confidence, and actually finish a story they can be proud of.”

Spaces are limited to just nine writers to ensure plenty of individual attention, with three spots already filled. An early bird price of £199 is available until 31st June 2025 (standard price £240).

The workshop runs from September 2025 to June 2026, meeting once a month on Saturday mornings at Kingswinford Library.
